What is Earth Day and what to do on Earth Day?

Amruta Khemkalyani

Earth Day is celebrated to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. This date is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, which is often March 20, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.

A lot of programs get arranged all over the world. To find about the events & campaigns visit the link here.

Now don’t get confused between Earth Hour and Earth Day. Since I started raising awareness about environment and sustainability in 2009, I can across many individuals and businesses who get confused between these two events. Earth Hour falls in March and is celebrated by switching off lights for an hour in the evening from 8.30 to 9.30 pm local time worldwide. And Earth day is celebrated in April every year. But what really matters is if you take efforts regularly to protect our environment or not, because celebrating these two days for our planet is not enough. Our every action towards our planet and people count.
