Amruta Khemkalyani

Tribe, we are all aware of the crisis of world hunger humanity is facing. However, most people on the opposite spectrum feel bad but don’t think they can do anything about it. If you are wondering ‘what can you and I do about it?’; here is your answer.

Before we dive into your action plan to reduce hunger, some of you might be interested in knowing what is the cause of the world hunger crisis? But the answer to it is not as simple, there are many reasons and causes, to name a few, poverty, climate, and climate change, political conflicts, etc. It is also better to understand the social and environmental aspects of food.

But however complex this problem is, we all can contribute positively and help reduce world hunger, here is how.

1. SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Shop and eat local, sustainable food. Read our thorough guide to sustainable eating here. This way you can consume and increase the demand for sustainable food and support sustainable agriculture.

2. REDUCE FOOD WASTE

An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Food gets wasted at many different stages right from food production, storage, transport, etc. But we all can definitely limit the food waste at the consumer end, in our kitchen, pantry, when eating out. Read here our practical guide to reducing food waste.

3. URBAN FARMING

Urban farming means growing your own food on the rooftops, terraces even indoors, you can even try vertical farming if space is an issue. Through urban farming, you can control how your food grows and you can grow your own sustainable food. Imagine if everyone in cities starts growing food, we definitely have a big hope of solving hunger problems. Read here our special post about growing food in a container garden.

4. CONTRIBUTE DIRECTLY

You can also directly contribute financially to reduce hunger. You can either directly provide financial help to a family under the poverty line or contribute financially to organizations like the World Food Program or  Share the meal that directly works with people facing hunger problems. You can also donate food for some disaster relief programs.

5. HELP IN PROVIDING ACCESS TO EDUCATION

Education is the best solution to end poverty and hunger. However many people from below the poverty line or from underdeveloped countries do not have access to basic education and are stuck in a vicious cycle. You can either volunteer your time and participate in programs where you can directly educate or help building schools. Or you can financially contribute to organizations that work to provide access to education like UNICEF.
