NEW MOTHER’S GUIDE TO GREEN PARENTING

Tribe, being a sustainability professional and a passionate educator, living sustainable is a big part of my life. But honestly, after having my baby, my priorities changed. My natural instincts took over, and I put my baby’s well-being before the environment. But do you know what, I figured out very quickly that keeping most things natural and Eco-friendly, are the best solutions even for my baby’s healthy growth?

Here are my tried, tested and favorite natural parenting tips for the early newborn stage.

1. DIAPERING

We struggled at the start to find a sustainable way of diapering our baby without compromising hygiene and his comfort. I used clothes diapers made of pure cotton in the first 3 months exclusively. But the amount of water needed to wash these diapers made me keep thinking about better ways. While traveling or going out, I used disposable Eco-friendly diapers, but the times when I had to change diaper within a few minutes, I used to think about carbon footprint even while changing diapers.
The quick-dry sheet is a great product to use for infants along with cloth diapers. The quick-dry sheet saves repeated washing and drying of bedding materials. You can just use a quick-dry sheet as the top layer on bedding or play-mat and keep your baby on it with cloth diapers. I remember every time we used to reach home from a trip outside and I used to put on the cloth diaper on him, my son used to give me a smile. Cloth diapers are much better health-wise and comfort-wise for babies. You can avoid diaper rashes completely if you use cloth diapers. Of course, you need to change these all the time and adds hassle especially if you don’t have much help during baby care. But the tip is to invest in good quality cotton cloth diapers and buy them in bulk. Also, make sure to dry them on Sun. Sun-drying is a natural anti-bacterial treatment.

Another important tip is to use wash clothes to wipe babies instead of baby wipes or wet wipes whenever possible. The fragrant wet wipes concept sounds very good for us but those great smelling wipes are actually harmful to the sensitive skin of infants. The chemicals in the fragrant wet wipes may cause some skin irritation in babies. But also these single-use wet wipes do not decompose and disintegrate easily and also are not easily recycled. If the wet wipes are flushed they also clog sewerage lines. The reusable wash clothes can avoid all these inconveniences and can be washed and reused again and are healthier for your baby’s skin.

2. BABY GEARS

My first and only recommendation for any baby gears or accessories is borrow, borrow and borrow. If you feel that you will feel uneasy to borrow something from somebody. Don’t worry, the motherhood makes you more practical and maybe a little shameless. I am sure most of the experienced mothers will agree with me on this.
If you are a first-time parent, the probability is; you don’t know what is best for your baby in the first go. So many times new parents buy certain items, but their babies never use it and the items are wasted. Now not just natural resources are wasted when one baby crib is wasted, it also becomes a costly affair for new parents.
Therefore, I would recommend even if you want to buy a brand new item first you can try that out with your baby with borrowed or rented baby gear and then you buy it. When you are borrowing or renting make sure to clean and disinfect the items. You can borrow or rent baby gears like cribs, car seats, strollers, bathtubs, and even toys.

I had borrowed an excellent crib from my friend who has a very cute daughter, unfortunately, she did not like to sleep in the crib. Luckily my son slept well in that crib and we use it till he outgrew it.

This way I could reuse the same crib which was completely useless for my friend. This is not just a matter of saving money but if using second-hand accessories helps to reduce landfills and saves the carbon footprint of the brand new accessory.

In Dubai, second-hand baby accessories can be found here,

3. And most important your friends and family.

There is one very important tip I have learned quickly that when you have baby better not to spend much on baby items or home items just because you like them or your baby might look cute in that. Babies grow fast and many expensive things you buy become useless very soon.

3. CLOTHING
I have figured out one important thing about baby clothes, which is not written anywhere in pregnancy or baby care sites or books. Better to buy front open clothes instead of those you slip from the head. It is a lot easier to put on these front open clothes on your newborn baby and you can use them for a longer time. Babies outgrow those ‘slip from head clothes’ within days.
Another thing I learned that better not to buy too many clothes or go shopping for cute baby clothes when you are pregnant when you are the slave of your motherhood hormones. Babies grow fast and you end up using those cute clothes only once or never at all.  Also, don’t keep aside clothes for any good occasion or outing, your babies will outgrow them quickly.

The best advice is to buy larger size clothes. I really appreciate all our friends and family members who gift my son bigger clothes on my request. So that he can use them in the future and can keep using it for a longer time. Most importantly their gift will not be wasted. Another point in the frequent washing of clothes is baby do throw up. So better to use burp cloths, bibs. So that you don’t need to change clothes all the time, you just change those bibs. You are not just saving water by reducing the number of clothes but that repeated cloth changing of an infant is a big hassle.

4. FEEDING
While stating the importance of breastfeeding point by point on our pediatrician’s file, the last point reads, “Breastfeeding is environment-friendly.” You might laugh at it but come to think of it, frequent washing and sterilizing of bottles and accessories, trying different formulas, etc. are not required with breastfeeding. I nursed my son for 1.5 years. We never even bought any kind of milk bottle and related accessories. After I stopped nursing him, he straight away started having milk in sippy cups.
Breastfeeding also helps to increase the immunity of a child and overall physical as well as mental growth of a child. Breastfeeding is also great for bonding mum and child but it also has advantages for mum, your chances of breast cancer reduce if you have done breastfeeding to your children.

Once your babies grow up and you try to wean them, my suggestion is to avoid any store-bought food and make your own baby food out of freshly bought organic fruits and vegetables. You can invest in some blender but always prefer homemade baby food over store-bought.

Teethers: Try to use as many natural teethers as possible instead of silicon or other artificial teethers. You can use hard edibles like raw carrot, dried dates, celery as teethers but you need to keep watch to avoid choking. These teethers not only help babies for teething but also add some nutrition instead of polymer teethers.
5. PLAY IDEAS

Playing and talking to your infants is very important for their overall growth. You don’t necessarily need to expose them to many noisy or flashy toys at this young age. Give them face time, talk to them, sing to them, read to them. They love to observe your expressions. Also from my experience introduce them to some surrounding sounds. We used to open the window, look out and hear things from outside and I used to explain to my son about the sounds, sights to introduce him to the world and surrounding nature. You can find some more interesting natural play ideas in this post.

It is an amazing experience as a mum to explore the environment, nature surrounding us. Taking all that in through our senses again with a baby and teach him to do the same! If we make our babies aware of nature from early on, it will be simpler to teach them how to live with nature in unison. They will definitely develop caring for their surrounding!
